February 28 Is The Heroes’ Day Celebration With Lots Of Music

heroesdayposter Heroes’ Day Celebration hits the Independence Square. February 28
On Thursday, 28th February, 2013, the Independence Square will come alive in a spectacular evening of drama, poetry, choreography and music to mark the Heroes’ Day Celebration.
The Heroes’ Day Celebration is held annually in honour of the three ex-servicemen of the Gold Coast Regiment- Sergent Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Ordartey Lamptey- who were shot dead while on an unarmed march to the Christiansburg Castle.
In 1948, the three soldiers were shot dead and  several others injured as they made their way to the castle to petition the Governor of the  British Colonial Government  of the then Gold Coast to pay their pensions and other gratuities due them after fighting in the Second World War. Their death sparked massive riots in the colony and provided a much needed impetus for the political leaders of the era to press for independence from the British government.
This year’s celebration will feature a play written and directed by one of Ghana’s emerging literary talents, Chief Moomen. His play entitled “Sheeda-ee” which is the Ga word for appreciation, will seek to reenact circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting incident. It will also seek to honour the memory of the fallen soldiers as well as their compatriots whose actions helped to propel our fight for independence. The evening will also feature musical performances from one of Ghana’s notable Hiplife artists, Okyemea Kwame as well as the acclaimed folk music group, Dadekotopong.
The event takes place this coming Thursday, 28th February at the independence Square from 7pm. Admission is free.
